It’s been an exciting few months for us here at Insight as we’ve welcomed new clients onboard and expanded our small but busy team.
The impact of the lockdown
Whilst the lockdown has been hard on pretty much every business out there, especially with Leicester’s local lockdown, we’re happy that we’ve had a steady stream of work and new creative projects added to the mix so it’s been very much business as usual.
With a combination of loyal clients and new work coming in, we made the decision to expand our team. It was important for us to find the right people who would complement our team and help us specialise in new areas. We’ve been lucky enough to hire two Content Writers, including one who also specialises in graphic design, and we’re happy to say they’ve settled in and feel like part of the furniture!
A word from one of our team
One of our new Content Writers Lizzie details her experiences about what it’s like to join a team virtually.
It’s safe to say that I’m a bit of an extrovert. I’m always happy to chat and make new friends but even I found the idea of joining a team I hadn’t met yet a little daunting. I didn’t need to worry though as on the first day I felt like I’d been there for ages!
When I first told my friends and family that I’d been offered a new job, the first thing they said was “congratulations, what are they like?” to which I’d reply that I’ve actually not met them in person yet, just through interviews over Zoom.
This is a pretty strange concept when you think about it, no handshakes, and not even visiting the office that you’ll be working each day. With the changes that Coronavirus has brought to our daily lives, this just seemed like part of the new normal.
It’s an odd thing logging into your computer on your first day as we’re all still working remotely, and joining a team you haven’t actually met yet. But, I’ve been so lucky that the whole team was so inviting and more than happy to help me with any of those first-day questions such as how to access certain accounts or how to use the online filing system.
Productivity and video conferencing software have been such a lifesaver and meant that I’ve felt like part of the team despite us all being scattered across Leicester rather than a few tables away in the office chatting over coffee.
In fact, some of those little daily office rituals have survived the lockdown, like morning meetings equipped with mugs of tea, coffee, and even smoothies. We’re still constantly learning as we take part in training and online courses except we’re doing them from the sofa or makeshift offices. We’re also still having regular brainstorms as we work collaboratively on projects from website designs to social media strategies.
We’re a team that’s bigger than six, so it looks like we won’t be able to meet up in person for a while due to the current government guidelines, but I’m looking forward to being able to when it’s safe to do so!
What we’ve learnt from working from home
- Keeping in touch with your team (even for non-work related things) is more important than ever and helps to keep you motivated and productive.
- It’s worth spending the time and energy making sure your desk space (whether it’s a sofa or a spare bedroom) is inspiring, functional, and overall a nice place to be.
- Fast and reliable wifi is the difference between a Monday feeling like a Friday or a Friday feeling like a Monday…
- Work social events are more important than ever to stop the day feeling like it’s just all work and no play. Having a laugh with your team will help to keep you sane!
- It’s so important that everyone is working from the same digital system so that no work gets lost whilst someone is at lunch or not working that day.
