Genetics Society, a UK charity dedicated to promoting genetics research, training, teaching and public engagement, approached us seeking the help of an agency capable of handling their full scope of needs. This included website optimisations and hosting for their website, as well as design and print services for their biannual publication, Genetics Society Magazine.

Supported In
Founded in 1919, The Genetics Society is the world’s first organisation dedicated to the study of the mechanisms of inheritance. With over 2,000 members, including researchers, educators, and students, the Society supports those interested in genetic research and education.
When Genetics Society approached us for support, their goals were clear: improve the user experience on their website, streamline content for easier access, and take over the management of a polished, professional magazine design that aligned with their vision and brand. They also wanted to consolidate all website and print management under one roof, while ensuring they retained the intellectual property (IP) rights of their brand and magazine.
The Challenges.
Website Issues
Their existing website was slow, had duplicate pages and a confusing navigation structure, making it hard for visitors to access the information they needed.
Print Management
Coordinating the design, production, and delivery of 2,000 magazines presented logistical challenges, particularly in ensuring that both digital and print versions adhered to different technical specifications (e.g., colours, hyperlinks, resolution).
How We Helped.
Website
- Website Audit: Conducted a thorough audit of the previous site, identifying areas needing improvement. We resolved duplicate content issues, improved web speed, added forms with a GDPR disclaimer, implemented a breadcrumb trail for easier navigation, and made other structural improvements to the site
- Navigation & Design: We improved the site’s navigation by creating a new responsive header with a mega menu and an improved footer, making it easier for users to find information
- Membership CTA: A new, responsive call-to-action (CTA) was implemented, encouraging membership sign-ups
- Font & Branding: Updated the website fonts to align with the brand guidelines, ensuring a cohesive and consistent user experience
- Set up a Data Dashboard: We set up a Google Looker Studio dashboard for the client to display data and reports in one place
Magazine
- Market Research & Strategy: Conducted research to determine how Genetics Society Magazine could stand out in the science magazine market. We worked closely with the client to devise a design strategy that balanced academic journal professionalism with readability
- Design: We fully designed Issue 90 from scratch, creating engaging designs and unique spreads for every section, making the content easy to digest and interesting to read throughout
- Print & Digital Versions: Created both print and digital versions of the magazine, with interactive hyperlinks & RGB colours for the digital version, and considering bleed lines, crop marks, CMYK colours, and DPI of images for the printed copies
- Print & Distribution: Produced 2,000 print copies of the magazine and coordinated the delivery to the distribution centre, ensuring timely delivery to subscribers
- Relinquished IP: Everything we design for Genetics Society is also owned by them
The Results.
Their website is now faster, easier to navigate, and fully aligned with Genetics Society’s branding. Visitors can easily access content through the improved mega menu and enjoy a more consistent user experience across all devices.
Issue 90 of Genetics Society Magazine was successfully designed, printed, and delivered, exceeding client expectations.
The Future.
Moving forward, Insight will continue to support with ongoing website maintenance, as well as continue to design future magazine issues, ensuring both their digital and print presence functions to a high standard and remains easy to manage.
The Team at Insight have been efficient, effective and personable. We are delighted with our first experience and look forward to working alongside the entire team going forward!
